Melbourne’s The Winey Cow brings its award-winning brunch bites to Main Beach | The Weekend Edition
As much as we enjoy breakfast and lunch, brunch is the real MVP. Crisp fried chicken perched atop housemade waffles, bathed in maple syrup sided with a slab of thick-cut bacon, what’s not to love? Perhaps a bowl brimming with scrambled tofu, zucchini and corn fritters and avocado or prosciutto-topped chilli scramble is more your vibe – no matter which way you turn, Main Beach’s newest eatery The Winey Cow delivers, spectacularly. Born in Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, the much-loved brunch spot has made a seachange to take over the former Beaches Off Tedder space on Woodroffe Avenue. Take a look inside …
There’s something inherently wonderful about brunch. Let’s be honest, anything paired with a mimosa is quite alright in our books. If you possess a soft spot for poached eggs after 10:00 am and firmly believe that burgers and tacos are an anytime food, then you’re going to love the cut of The Winey Cow’s jib. The venue, which officially opens today (Tuesday March 28), is the brainchild of restaurateurs Cam and Jill Henderson alongside four of their former staff members who have come on board as co-owners – Jade Bremner, Rui Lourenco, Britt Ryan and Magenta Hornsey. The original outpost opened in Mornington in 2014 and has become a much-loved fixture for mid-morning bites picking up several notable accolades including Cafe of the Year in the Victorian and Tasmanian Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence. The secret to their unwavering popularity comes down to nailing the fundamentals – drool-inducing dishes, slurp-worthy drinks and friendly service.
As you may have deduced, brunch is the hero here with a menu that spans from light bites such as granola and brekkie bowls to southern fried-chicken burgers, grazing plates loaded with a selection of cheeses, olives, jalapeno and pale ale salami, prosciutto, smoked tomato, pickled spiced beetroot and lavosh, and crisp Vietnamese calamari salad. In addition to championing brunch, the team has also employed a local ethos when it comes to sourcing ingredients, supporting local where ever possible. What’s brunch without a beverage or two? You needn’t find out, because The Winey Cow has a seriously impressive selection ranging from mocktails and fresh juice to spritzes and cocktails such as chilli margaritas, espresso martinis and mimosas. For those in the mood for something a little stronger than coffee, there’s a boozy brunch option where you can enjoy a main meal and an hour’s worth of bottomless mimosas for $49. Oh, and just in case you were wondering, the name is a nod to Cam and Jill’s love of wine and cheese. The Winey Cow also prides itself on being family-friendly, which absolutely extends to fur babies. There’s even a dedicated doggy menu filled with tail-wagging bites such as 36-hour air-dried chicken breast, lamb shank bones and puppuccinos.
