Australian professional boxer Jai Opetaia gets his chance at the IBF cruiserweight title when he fights champion Mairis Briedis later this year.

Opetaia got the opportunity to fight for the world championship after a brilliant TKO win against Ben Kelleher in October 2020.

When is Opetaia vs. Briedis?

The parties had agreed to a fight on April 6 but the bout was postponed slightly after Briedis contracted COVID-19 and then the flu.


A new date - Wednesday, May 11 - was then agreed, but Opetaia suffered a rib injury in training.

Organisers have now landed on Saturday, July 2.


Opetaia last fought in December, a three-round stoppage of Daniel Russell.

For Briedis, it will be even longer between bouts, having most recently stopped Artur Mann in three rounds in October.

The Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre will play host to the world title bout.

The Aussie boxer has a record of 21-0, he has been on a tear in recent years and is next in line for the cruiserweight world title.

Opetaia qualified for the 2012 Olympics as a heavyweight at the age of 16, making him the youngest ever Australian Olympic boxer.

The 26-year-old competes in the cruiserweight division weighing 86.2kg for his fights and stands at 193cm with a reach of 193cm.

The cruiserweight is undefeated in his professional career with 21 wins and 17 by KO.

Who is Mairis Briedis?

Opetaia is fighting three-time cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis, who is in ranked number 13 on BoxRec's pound-for-pound list.

Briedis became the first Latvian to hold a world boxing championship when he won the cruiserweight title in 2017.

The 37-year-old has only one loss in his professional career to recent heavyweight world champion Olesksandr Usyk, who defeated Anthony Joshua in September.

Briedis is on a five-fight winning streak since the loss in 2018 and is looking to continue his form against Opetaia
